Winter and Spring were both cool with plentiful rainfall. Summer was hot and exceptionally dry, with record heat-spikes in late January and early February. The Fiano showed its ability to stand up to the heat, and harvest took place on the same day in late February as the previous vintage.
Chalmers - Colbinabbin, Heathcote.
Ancient Red Cambrian soils interspersed with copper-infused basalt (greenstone). Easterly aspect, east-west row orientation. VCR3 clone close-planted in 2009. Cane pruned. Machine harvested with onboard sorting on 26th February 2019.
The WinemakingThe machine harvested fruit was given skin contact for 24 hours to gently extract skin phenolics. After pressing, half of the juice was settled to a high level of clarity for inoculated tank fermentation. The remaining half was transferred to old white puncheons with a higher level of solids for barrel fermentation using wild yeast. The two portions were blended before bottling without fining on 11th September 2019.
Medium straw colour with green tints. The nose displays intense aromas of yellow pear, apple and spring blossom. The palate reflects the warmer vintage, with ripe fruit up front, a beautiful textural component derived from the skin contact, and a deliciously long finish.
