    Shiraz

    The Vintage

Winter and Spring were both cool with plentiful rainfall. Summer was mild, which led to a late start to vintage under clear, sunny skies with cool overnight temperatures. These ideal harvest conditions resulted in excellent flavour ripeness at low sugar levels.

    The Site

    Chalmers - Colbinabbin, Heathcote.

Ancient Red Cambrian soils interspersed with copper-infused basalt. Easterly aspect, east-west row orientation.

    2626 clone close-planted in 2009. Cane Pruned. Hand-picked on 17th March 2017.

    The Winemaking

75% destemmed, with 25% whole bunches added into open fermenters. Wild yeast fermentation took place once the must had warmed naturally over a number of days. The cap was gently hand plunged and pumped over once per day during the peak of ferment. After 18 days on skins the wine was pressed and transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation. 25% of the oak was new French barriques (Vallaurine, Saury and Ermitage), with the remainder in older French barriques. The wine was racked twice during its 15 months in barrel, before bottling unfined on 27th August 2018.

    The Wine

The 2017 Journey Wines Heathcote Shiraz has a lifted nose exhibiting sweet blackberry and mulberry aromas and attractive floral notes. The palate is similarly fresh and bright, juicy dark berries are complemented by dark chocolate and white-pepper spice.

This is a great example of the elegant and more delicate style we are aiming for with our Heathcote Shiraz.
